Examining the influences of experience, personality and attitude on SCUBA divers’ underwater behaviour: A structural equation model

چکیده
This study examines and extends the empirical evidence of the causal relationships among experience, personality and attitude on the behaviour of scuba divers. The empirical data were collected from divers (n 1⁄4 413) in the five most popular islands for scuba diving in Malaysia. Measurements of diving attitude, experience and underwater behaviour were developed based on the literature and expert opinions. The ‘Big Five’model was utilised to measure the personality of divers. Data were analysed using the structural equation modelling to examine the relationships among the constructs. Past experience was found to be the most important factor in explaining divers’ underwater behaviour, followed by diving attitude and personality. Diving attitude partially mediates the relationships between experience and underwater behaviour. The paper discusses some of its theoretical and managerial contributions which could facilitate the design and management of potential detrimental impacts caused by divers in the marine

Personality profiles of recreational scuba divers
Although classified as an extreme sport, recreational scuba diving differs substantially from other forms of extreme sport. As a result, several researchers have theorized that scuba divers would display unique personality traits but little research has thus far been conducted regarding the issue. Previous investigations tended to group participants of different types of extreme sports together...
متن کاملUnderstanding the underwater behaviour of scuba divers in Hong Kong.
Diving-related activities may constitute a major threat to coral reefs. This study aimed to quantify the impact of diving in Hong Kong on hard corals and understand how socio-economic characteristics and experience level of divers influence diver-inflicted damage. We recorded and analysed the underwater behaviour of 81 recreational divers. On average, a diver was in contact with marine biota 14...
متن کاملDeveloping self-guided scuba dive routes in the Algarve (Portugal) and analysing visitors' perceptions
Scuba diving allows for underwater visitation of cultural and natural resources. Underwater routes can be used as a tool for guided and supervised underwater visits. Two scuba diving routes were implemented in the Algarve (South of Portugal), the “B24” and “Poço” diving sites. The perceptions of scuba divers regarding several aspects of the routes and the existing support infrastructures were s...
متن کاملEar disorders in scuba divers.
History of underwater diving dates back to antiquity. Breath-hold technique in diving was known to the ancient nations. However, deep diving progressed only in the early decades of the 19th century as the result of advancements in efficient underwater technologies which subsequently led to invention of sophisticated sets of scuba diving in the 20th century. Currently, diving is performed for va...
متن کاملScuba divers' pulmonary oedema. A review.
The literature on scuba divers' pulmonary oedema (SDPE) is reviewed, especially in its relationship to other immersioninduced pulmonary oedemas. It is concluded that although the three forms induced by swimming, freediving and scuba diving have some features in common, there are significant differences in their demographics, causation and clinical management. The swimming-induced cases tend to ...
